What is Coaching?

It is easier to describe what coaching does than what coaching is.

  • Coaching is an art of discovery more than a science of delivery. The use of questions and conversation in coaching means that we begin from a posture of humility and discovery, not authority and knowledge. The coach serves as a catalyst in the persons own journey of discovery. Coaching has taken place when this discovery leads to action and accomplishment.
  • A coach is also someone who believes that people possess more capacity than they are currently expressing.  A coach thinks of people in term of their potential, not their performance.
  • It is helpful to see a coach as a means of transportation –  much like a stage coach of old – a vehicle to get someone from where they are to where they want to be.

Leadership Coaching for Individuals

  • In a relationship a coach comes alongside and gets a person from where they are to where they want to be – Using their agenda to make forward progress. Out of this will come new thoughts and new solutions to get them to the goals they have for themselves. I’ll use powerful questions to bring new insight to get you to where you want to be. Coaching For Ministry Teams

  • There is strength in coaching teams. A focused team can take on much more than a number of individuals. A healthy team begins by defining why they exist as a team. They move on to what each member of the team contributes to the outcome.
  • The advantage of utilizing a team coach is to provide the perception from one’s constituents about the performance and development opportunities for an identified executive or team. The belief is that while we can evaluate our own abilities, it is often done in a vacuum without the perceptions of others around us.

 

Coaching for Life Transformation

Coaching moves people forward. A successful coaching relationship is always a story of transformation, not just of higher levels of performance. It’s a story that takes people beyond their immediate passion and pride and helps them to come to grips with the fact that, to reach what is achievable for them, fundamentally question who they are, what they do, and why they do it.

 

Developing a Life Plan

  • Assess where you are. Determine where you want to be. Use a coach to sort through the options. Set your own attainable goals in predetermined categories or “accounts” such as priorities, finances, family, health, friends, and service.
